The Alhambra
Did you know The Alhambra is the most visited tourist attraction in Spain? If you don’t believe me, just see the crowds mid-week in January! The Alhambra is a medieval fortress/palace complex, a symbol of Spain’s Islamic rule which ended in the 14th century. It’s incredibly well preserved, with gardens to wander through and palaces within palaces! Surrounded by the snow capped Sierra Nevadas, the Alhambra is nestled within Grenada, which has an old quarter full of winding alleyways, Moroccan tea houses and white washed walls. The Alhambra is a beast of a place to wander around and easily takes up an entire day. There is just so much history here, dripping from every pillar, statue and palm tree. It’s like nothing else in Spain we’ve visited. The architecture and the open courtyards transport you away from Europe and into a sweltering afternoon in the Middle East. You can almost see the courtiers dressed in their robes, eating dates and drinking tea.
